The US Department of Commerce notified Anthropic that a revised license now permits a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers to redeploy Anthropic’s Mythos 5 model, according to a letter dated June 26 and viewed by The Verge.
The letter, from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic co‑founder Tom Brown, states that the revision is based on Anthropic’s work with the US government to address risks associated with Mythos 5 and Fable 5. It allows non‑US national employees of the approved organizations, as well as Anthropic employees who are not US nationals, to access Mythos 5.
Anthropic spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri said the company received notice that Mythos 5 can be redeployed to the approved set of providers and that it is working to restore their access as quickly as possible. She added that Anthropic continues to collaborate with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and to make Fable 5 available for general use.
The government did not lift the June 12 export control directive that bars foreign nationals from accessing either model, including Anthropic’s own employees. Instead, it created an exception for Mythos 5 modeled on the approval granted to OpenAI’s GPT‑5.6 earlier in the week.
Lutnick’s letter notes that Anthropic has committed to work with the US government on protocols, standards, and releases for Mythos‑class models and reserves the right to adjust the scope of license requirements if circumstances change. All other requirements of the June 12 letter remain in effect until further notice.
