Four DeepMind leaders depart to found Discovery Loop; Demis Hassabis shifts to chair role

Four senior leaders from Google DeepMind—Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le—have announced their departure to cofound Discovery Loop, a Public Benefit Corporation focused on automating machine learning, science, and engineering workflows. The announcement was made via a joint statement and individual posts on August 5, 2026.

At the same time, Demis Hassabis will transition from CEO to Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, stepping back from day-to-day operations to focus on long-term strategy and accelerating scientific breakthroughs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously a prominent research leader at DeepMind, will take on the role of SVP of Google DeepMind, overseeing teams working on Gemini, frontier research, and product development.

Google confirmed it is investing in Discovery Loop, which is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation. The seed funding round is led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, Doerr Capital, and Alphabet. The startup’s mission centers on automating scientific and engineering discovery, a focus distinct from general-purpose model development.

The departures follow a pattern of high-profile exits from Google DeepMind, including John Jumper’s move to Anthropic and Noam Shazeer’s return to OpenAI, as well as earlier departures by David Silver and Denny Zhou. These moves, combined with the absence of a Gemini Pro update in the past six months, have fueled speculation about internal shifts in strategy and execution at Google DeepMind.
