- LitPivot is a system that helps researchers dynamically contextualize their ideas within the literature landscape to support early-stage research ideation.
- In a study with 17 researchers, proposals developed using LitPivot were rated as better grounded in relevant literature than those developed with a text editor and an AI chat tool.
- Participants reported stronger understanding of surrounding literature and greater perceived novelty and usefulness of their revised ideas.

Allen Institute for AI (Ai2), in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, released LitPivot, a system designed to assist researchers during early-stage ideation by dynamically contextualizing draft proposals within the broader literature landscape.
LitPivot allows researchers to segment a proposal into facets—problem, contribution, and evaluation—and retrieve and organize relevant papers around each facet. Researchers can then request literature-supported critiques and receive suggested revisions with supporting excerpts from selected studies.
In a lab study with 17 researchers, domain experts rated proposals developed using LitPivot as better grounded in relevant literature than those developed using a text editor and an AI chat tool. Participants also reported a stronger understanding of the surrounding literature and greater perceived novelty and usefulness of their revised ideas.
The system was evaluated in two studies: one involving assigned ideas and a controlled comparison, and another where five researchers used LitPivot on their own ongoing projects during 30-minute sessions. In the follow-up, participants used LitPivot across multiple project phases, including vetting new ideas and refining more mature ones.
LitPivot will be presented at UIST 2026 in Detroit. The work builds on Ai2’s broader effort to develop AI systems that help researchers formulate testable ideas and examine evidence, including tools like Asta for theory generation and AutoDiscovery for hypothesis testing.
