TL;DR
  • Shopify added WebMCP support for checkout, enabling browser-based AI agents to read and update order details and complete purchases with buyer authorization.
  • The update includes three new tools—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—rolling out to eligible Shopify merchants.
  • Shopify also announced a new direct partnership with Instinct for agentic commerce.

Shopify expanded WebMCP support to include checkout, allowing browser-based AI agents to interact with the checkout screen, update order details such as address or delivery options, and submit transactions after receiving the buyer’s authorization. The company stated this capability avoids the need for screenshots or web scraping.

The update introduces three new WebMCP tools—get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout—designed to let agents inspect a checkout, modify fields, and place orders with buyer consent. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, according to Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify.

Shopify already provides a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent interactions, but WebMCP targets agents operating within the buyer’s browser. Both protocols rely on Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which standardizes product discovery, cart building, and checkout processes.

Shopify highlighted existing partnerships with top AI agents like Muse and Instinct for agentic commerce. The company announced a new direct partnership with Instinct alongside the WebMCP checkout update.

Greenberg emphasized that WebMCP tools offer structured APIs designed via UCP to ensure accurate commerce data, required disclosures, and handoff requirements, making agent-driven shopping more reliable.
