TL;DR
  • OpenAI announced an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
  • The group aims to give mathematicians input into OpenAI’s math-oriented research and assess the significance of new results.
  • OpenAI claims its internal model has resolved more than 100 open problems across most areas of mathematics.
  • The group will not have authority to slow or redirect OpenAI’s ongoing mathematical research.

OpenAI announced the creation of an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The group is designed to provide mathematicians with a voice in OpenAI’s math-oriented research and serve as a bridge to the broader mathematical community.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, the same internal model that recently published a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem has also resolved more than 100 additional open problems across most areas of mathematics.

The advisory group’s role is limited to assessing the significance of new mathematical results and coordinating their release. Members will not be paid but retain the ability to offer unsolicited advice, express public views, and control their own membership, ensuring a degree of independence from OpenAI.

The group will not have any authority to influence the pace or direction of OpenAI’s internal mathematical research. OpenAI’s blog post explicitly states that the group ‘will not be responsible for advising us on how to pace our internal progress on mathematics.’

The Institute for Advanced Study emphasized this limitation in its own announcement, stating that while advice will be given, the institute does not have decision-making power at any AI company, and responsibility for decisions rests with the company.

Nine prominent mathematicians have been named as initial members of the group. Notably, only one of these members—Camillo De Lellis of the Institute for Advanced Study—also signed a recent open letter from 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians criticizing the pace of AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs.
