TL;DR
  • The Pentagon’s GenAI.mil portal added custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok to its roster of approved AI tools.
  • The portal already hosts Google’s Gemini and is designed to let 3 million DoD personnel use commercial AI without routing sensitive data through consumer channels.
  • ChatGPT Mil focuses on administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy, while Grok for Government emphasizes warfighter productivity and secure collaboration.
  • The additions follow the Pentagon’s broader push to integrate AI while avoiding consumer-data collection practices and supply-chain risks like those posed by Anthropic’s Claude.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has integrated custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok into GenAI.mil, its centralized, secure AI portal for civilian and military personnel. The additions bring the total number of supported models on the platform to three, joining Google’s Gemini, which launched with the portal in 2025.

GenAI.mil is designed to provide DoD employees with access to commercial frontier AI models while keeping sensitive government data off consumer-facing platforms. The portal explicitly exempts military users from the data collection practices common in consumer AI products, according to the DoD.

ChatGPT Mil, developed under OpenAI’s government program, offers familiar chat, file, project, and custom GPT features tailored to document-heavy, routine unclassified work. The Pentagon intends the tool to support administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy workflows, with additional features planned for future updates.

Grok for Government, provided via SpaceX’s Starshield AI—a secure satellite network built on Starlink technology—is positioned for broader military use cases. The DoD describes its purpose as delivering "immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration" for warfighters, and enabling faster, more precise mission execution across contexts such as market research for acquisition professionals and supply-chain management for logisticians.

The portal has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of the DoD’s 3 million personnel, reflecting strong early adoption of the platform.

The Pentagon’s latest moves follow its ongoing efforts to expand AI capabilities while managing supply-chain risks. The department has avoided Anthropic’s Claude model due to a supply-chain risk designation issued by the Trump administration, which Anthropic is contesting in court. The DoD has instead pursued partnerships with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI to bolster its AI infrastructure.
