Google adds toggle to remove visible AI watermarks from images, video, and audio

Google announced it will allow users to remove visible watermarks from AI-generated images, video, and audio produced by its models, including Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria. The toggle will be available in the Gemini app and Google’s video editor, Flow, with support for Search planned. Users can access the setting in the coming days via Settings > Media Watermark.

The company emphasized that disabling visible watermarks will not affect invisible provenance mechanisms. Google’s SynthID watermark and C2PA standard-related metadata will continue to identify AI-generated content for transparency and verification purposes, including through Gemini and Search.

In a post on X, Josh Woodward, Google’s VP for Gemini, framed the change as a balance between creative control and safety. He noted that while visible watermarks can limit the utility of AI-generated media for professional and creative work, the need to identify AI content remains critical.

To help developers integrate provenance validation into their own applications, Google said it is open-sourcing a new library called Credentio. The library is intended to let developers embed local validation mechanisms for AI-generated content, supporting ongoing efforts to standardize content authenticity across platforms.
