Meta rolls out Meta AI chatbot in Threads DMs globally

Meta announced on July 27, 2026, that it is rolling out its Meta AI chatbot within Threads’ direct messages (DMs) globally. This integration enables users to privately converse with Meta AI, share Threads posts, images, links, and videos, and ask follow-up questions directly in DMs.

Previously, Threads users in select markets could interact with Meta AI in public posts, similar to how users interact with Grok on X. Meta AI was already available in DMs on other Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The update is being introduced globally on July 27, 2026, with Meta noting it is continuing to test Meta AI in Threads’ public feeds in a handful of global markets. The company stated it will consider user feedback before expanding public feed integration more broadly.

Users can manage their experience with Meta AI by muting @meta.ai, using a 'Not interested' option on any Meta AI post, or hiding AI replies that appear on their posts. This move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to position Threads as a platform where users can access information and recommendations without leaving the app, thereby discouraging the use of third-party AI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
