Hugging Face CEO argues open source AI adoption is accelerating among Fortune 500 firms

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said open source AI adoption is accelerating among large enterprises, with many firms migrating from frontier APIs to open models as costs rise. He described the company’s platform as functioning like a GitHub for AI, where builders share and download open models and datasets. According to Delangue, roughly half of the Fortune 500 now use Hugging Face’s platform.

Delangue argued that the open versus closed source debate has intensified in the wake of Anthropic’s halted Fable release, emphasizing concerns about a small number of companies controlling AI development. He also highlighted the role of Chinese labs in producing many of the open models downloaded in the U.S., framing it as a challenge worth addressing rather than a reason to distrust open source itself.

On business strategy, Delangue said Hugging Face prioritizes capital efficiency over traditional Silicon Valley fundraising, noting the company declined a large investment offer from Nvidia last year. He positioned robotics as an even more urgent case for open, transparent AI than chatbots or coding tools, citing the sensitivity of data involved in home and family environments.

The comments were made during an interview on TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, where Delangue discussed broader trends in AI development and deployment.
