Spotify launches ElevenLabs-powered audiobook creation tool for independent authors

Spotify is integrating ElevenLabs' generative voice technology into its author platform, enabling self-publishers to create AI-narrated audiobooks within Spotify for Authors. The feature enters beta in June with invite-only access and English-language support, expanding to additional languages later. The tool does not lock authors into exclusive publishing contracts, allowing them to distribute generated audiobooks through competing platforms.

The partnership builds on prior ElevenLabs integration that allowed audiobook submissions to Spotify and follows the company's earlier collaboration with Google Play Books for AI-generated narration. According to Spotify, the shift aims to provide authors access to voice models with higher expressiveness and human-like quality. ElevenLabs released its own author self-publishing platform in 2025, setting a precedent for direct author access to generative voice tools.

Spotify is simultaneously expanding Audiobook+ subscription options with higher listening limits and announced plans for student and family plan variants, though specific pricing and usage caps were not disclosed. The platform is extending language support to French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian variants, addressing geographic gaps in its catalog.

Spotify's audiobook business has grown substantially, reaching 700,000 titles and over one million Audiobook+ subscriptions. The company reports 60% year-on-year growth in audiobook listening hours and is tracking toward $100 million in annualized recurring revenue from audiobook operations. Listening engagement from users who joined in the past year accounts for more than half of all audiobook listener activity on the platform.
