NVIDIA CEO to meet with Sen. Cruz to discuss open-source AI and chip supply chain

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is set to meet with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, this week to discuss artificial intelligence policy, including continued access to open-source AI models and the company’s role in strengthening the U.S. chip supply chain. A source familiar with the meeting confirmed to Nextgov/FCW that the two are scheduled to meet at some point during Huang’s visit to Washington, D.C.

An NVIDIA spokesperson told Nextgov/FCW that Huang will discuss the company’s plan to produce $500 billion in American technology over four years and its leadership in open-source AI. The spokesperson declined to provide details on the meeting’s length or other specifics. Politico previously reported Huang’s presence in the capital this week.

Huang has publicly emphasized the benefits of open models, stating in a post on X that they strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation, and enable sovereignty. He added that the world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

Cruz, as chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, has been central to congressional efforts to craft comprehensive AI legislation. He introduced the SANDBOX Act in September 2025, which proposes a light-touch regulatory approach to AI. Last week, Politico reported that Cruz was considering drafting additional legislation to address catastrophic risks from AI, following a containment breach involving ChatGPT 5.6 and a subsequent attack on Hugging Face’s data infrastructure.

NVIDIA’s visit and policy push come as the company leads a new security alliance launched on Monday with more than 30 other companies. The alliance is focused on advancing open-source technologies for cybersecurity.
