NIST seeks nominations for AI advisory committee seats

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) opened a public call for nominations to fill upcoming vacancies on its National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC) and six other federal advisory committees. The notice, published in the Federal Register, invites individuals and organizations to submit names for consideration for appointment to the committees.

The AI-specific committee includes a dedicated subcommittee focused on artificial intelligence and law enforcement, reflecting NIST’s emphasis on cross-cutting technical and policy issues. NIST stated it will consider nominations received in response to this notice alongside nominations already received from prior calls and unsolicited submissions.

The notice also specifies that registered federal lobbyists may only serve as representatives on specific NIST federal advisory committees that explicitly allow such membership. It further clarifies that race or sex will not be considered in the selection of committee membership.

NIST’s advisory committees provide formal, structured input to the Institute and federal policymakers on technical standards, safety frameworks, and governance practices. The National AI Advisory Committee plays a key role in advising NIST on AI-related priorities, including measurement science, evaluation methodologies, and risk management.
