TL;DR
  • Crusoe abandoned a $1.25B agreement to buy 29 Boom Superpower turbines for its AI data centers.
  • Boom confirmed the deal is no longer proceeding, with deliveries originally slated to begin in 2027.
  • Crusoe stated it remains open to turbines as part of its energy mix but not under the current partnership.
  • Boom aims to deliver about 250MW of Superpower turbines in 2027 and target 1GW in 2028 to other customers.

Crusoe, an AI data center startup, has ended a $1.25B agreement to purchase 29 of Boom Supersonic’s 42-megawatt Superpower turbines for its data centers, including a campus in Abilene, Texas, built for OpenAI and Oracle.

Boom Supersonic CEO Blake Scholl announced on X that the companies are no longer moving forward with the turbine launch partnership, stating that turbines are no longer part of Crusoe’s near-term primary power mix for its sites.

Scholl added that Boom will deliver about 250 megawatts of Superpower turbines to other customers in 2027 and is targeting 1 gigawatt in 2028, while leaving the door open for future collaboration with Crusoe if turbines become part of its power strategy.

A Crusoe spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the partnership is no longer active, noting the company remains flexible in choosing energy solutions for its expanding portfolio of AI data centers, which currently rely on the grid and gas-turbine backup power.

Crusoe is also building a 900-megawatt data center in Abilene for Microsoft, which will use on-site gas turbines, underscoring the role of gas-powered solutions in its infrastructure plans despite the canceled Boom deal.

Boom raised $300M last year largely to commercialize the Superpower turbine business, with the goal of using profits to fund development of its Overture supersonic jet.
