TL;DR
  • Microsoft is launching a redesigned Copilot ‘super app’ that consolidates chat, coding, and agent capabilities into a single interface with three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot.

  • Autopilot, formerly Scout, is rebranded as a cloud-based ‘digital teammate’ with enterprise-grade identity, memory, and governance.
  • Microsoft will use usage-based billing for Cowork, Code, and Autopilot features, with regular Copilot licenses covering Chat and Microsoft 365 apps.
  • The Home and Code tabs will roll out to the Frontier program in coming weeks; Autopilot enters private preview later this month.

Microsoft is launching a redesigned Copilot ‘super app’ that consolidates Copilot Chat, Code, and Autopilot into a single interface with three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot. The Home tab combines Copilot Chat and Cowork as a personalized dashboard for emails, meetings, Teams threads, and activity summaries. Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer of AI at work, describes Home as a space to ‘get your bearings’ and resume work where users left off.

The Code tab introduces a sandboxed environment for creating apps, trackers, dashboards, or automations, and sharing them as cloud-hosted internal tools. Microsoft states Code is powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and runs securely within a user’s tenant. This feature will be available in preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year.

Autopilot, previously known as Scout and unveiled at Microsoft Build earlier this year, is being rebranded as a cloud-based ‘digital teammate.’ Unlike typical AI agents, Autopilot operates within a user’s tenant with its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace. It is designed to perform tasks such as monitoring Teams channels, running recurring work tasks, or handling follow-ups, and can be @mentioned in Teams, Outlook, chats, channels, and documents with enterprise-grade permissions, audit, and governance.

Microsoft is introducing usage-based billing for the Cowork, Code, and Autopilot components of the new Copilot app, while the regular Copilot license covers Copilot Chat and integration with Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. IT administrators will use Microsoft’s FinOps for AI to manage AI spending and prevent uncontrolled agentic usage.

The Home and Code tabs will begin rolling out to Microsoft’s Frontier program for early access AI features ‘in the coming weeks,’ and Autopilot will enter private preview later this month. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has described Copilot as a new operating system for work, stating that the company is ‘building Copilot as a new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor, and every task.’

Microsoft positions the new Copilot app as ‘the AI built for work,’ contrasting it with consumer-focused alternatives like Claude or ChatGPT. The company’s leadership changes, including appointing a single Copilot leader, and the integration of previously separate consumer and commercial Copilot apps, reflect a long-overdue consolidation effort to compete in the AI era.
