OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap departs to pursue unspecified new venture

Brad Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018 and held roles including chief financial officer and chief operating officer, announced his departure in an internal message shared publicly on August 11, 2026. Lightcap stated it was “bittersweet to share that I’ll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new.” He noted he had led the development of OpenAI’s early operations and business teams, including Finance, Legal, People, Corporate Security, Go-to-Market/Government, and Partnerships. Lightcap transitioned from COO to lead special projects earlier this year as part of an executive shakeup at the company.

In his message, Lightcap framed his departure as part of a broader reflection on the “next horizon” and what would be required to advance OpenAI’s mission. He hinted at plans for a future venture while providing few details, saying, “I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period.” He added that he would share more about his plans “soon” and reaffirmed his belief in OpenAI’s mission.

Lightcap’s exit follows the announced departures of other senior leaders at OpenAI, including Fidji Simo, the company’s former No. 2 executive who led AGI development, who announced her intention to step down in July 2026. Other executives, including Bill Peebles, former head of the now-discontinued video generator Sora, and Kevin Weil, vice president of the company’s Science vertical, have also recently left the firm.

The departures come as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering of industrywide significance, a process that has coincided with broader executive turnover at the company.
