Brad Lightcap, who held the roles of special projects lead and former chief operating officer at OpenAI, announced his departure after an eight-year tenure at the company. In an internal memo later posted to X, Lightcap told colleagues he would be starting “something new.” He stated that over the past months he had focused on “the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success,” adding that he believes “there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period.” Lightcap also noted he would remain available to support the company for the next few weeks.
Lightcap’s role evolved multiple times over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his responsibilities as COO expanded to include oversight of OpenAI’s business and day-to-day operations, global deployment, business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure, and operational excellence. In January 2026, he stepped back from leading the company’s enterprise push as it related to product and engineering but retained commercial functions. By April 2026, he officially stepped down from the COO role and transitioned into a new position leading special projects, reporting to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, assumed a significant portion of his former responsibilities.
Lightcap’s departure follows other high-profile executive exits. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s former AGI chief, departed in July after a period of medical leave, and Kate Rouch, the company’s chief marketing officer, stepped down in April for health reasons. The company has also undergone reorganizations, including shifting company president Greg Brockman to oversee product and emphasizing revenue drivers in preparation for a potential public listing.
