Patreon lays off 20% of workforce amid AI-driven industry shifts

Patreon announced it will lay off 20% of its workforce, amounting to roughly 93 employees, as part of a restructuring effort. The company’s CEO, Jack Conte, attributed the decision in part to AI’s ‘fundamental transformation’ of the tech industry, including shifts in how work is performed and products are built. In a memo to employees, Conte emphasized that the changes were not being made ‘because we believe AI replaces humans,’ while also noting that AI has altered ‘how we operate and organize’ at the company. During a prior interview, Conte stated that Patreon is ‘100 percent embracing’ AI tools internally to continue serving creators, warning that failure to adopt these tools could result in the company’s demise within three years. This follows earlier layoffs in 2022, when Patreon reduced its workforce by 17% and closed offices in Dublin and Berlin.
