Elon Musk praises Mythos/Fable, says SpaceX won’t cut off Anthropic despite rivalry

Elon Musk publicly distanced himself from suggestions that SpaceX could abruptly sever Anthropic’s access to compute, calling such a move “not my style.” In a post on X, Musk added, “I was clearly wrong about Anthropic,” revisiting a September 2025 remark in which he said “winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic.”

The comments follow Anthropic’s May agreement to purchase the entire 300 megawatt output of SpaceX’s xAI Colossus 1 data center near Memphis, Tennessee, for $1.25 billion per month through May 2029. Google separately agreed to rent SpaceX infrastructure for $920 million per month through June 2029.

Musk framed Anthropic as the current leader in AI, asserting that “no company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable” and predicting that Anthropic would soon have Mythos 2 ready. He also cited Tesla’s 2014 patent pledge and the company’s decision to open its Supercharger network and charging port design to competitors as evidence of his broader philosophy toward rivals.

Anthropic retains contractual protections and financial incentives for SpaceX to maintain service, but hosting Anthropic’s compute could give SpaceX engineers visibility into Anthropic’s operations and potential insights into AI development practices.

Musk’s remarks come amid broader scrutiny of AI infrastructure concentration and the competitive dynamics between AI labs and their compute providers, including allegations of technology distillation and concerns about dependency on single vendors.
