OpenAI describes its new agent platform, Dots, as enterprise software that can also assist with personal tasks such as ordering dinner. The platform features anthropomorphic avatars and is currently limited to one agent per user, according to a hands-on review by The Verge.
The interface resembles that of other agent platforms, with a chat window and a separate pane showing the agent’s actions on a virtual machine. Unlike Meta’s Muse, which is positioned as a personal assistant, Dots is framed as a workplace tool that can interact with software like Blender and GIMP out of the box.
Access to a user’s own computer is possible through the desktop ChatGPT app, and users can engage with their agent via voice. OpenAI is initially offering Dots to users on its highest-tier accounts, including the $100-per-month Pro tier.
In testing, Dots struggled with tasks requiring interaction with security checks, such as scheduling an installation appointment and accessing a teriyaki restaurant’s ordering page. The agent also lacked integrated payment options, requiring users to manually input bank account details for transactions.
The review notes that Dots was outperformed by competing agents like Meta’s Instinct in some personal tasks, such as finding a free tour option at a coworking space. The agent’s performance on security-sensitive tasks suggests potential limitations in handling real-world, consumer-facing workflows.
