ChatGPT and Gemini each report reaching at least 1 billion monthly active users

OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, a threshold the company had not previously disclosed. OpenAI’s spokesperson stated that ChatGPT crossed the 1 billion monthly user mark in July, revising earlier public figures that had cited 900 million weekly active users in February of this year. The company did not provide a monthly user figure at that time.

Google separately announced that its Gemini product now has at least 1 billion monthly users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X that a billion people use Gemini every month and described it as Google’s fastest-growing product ever. Google’s disclosure follows internal updates that showed Gemini’s user base rising from 750 million in February to 950 million in late July, before reaching 1 billion last week.

The two announcements arrive weeks apart and rely on different reporting cadences. OpenAI’s confirmation came in an August 6 blog post that described how people use AI, while Google’s figures were conveyed through a CEO social media post and an earnings update. Neither company provided a direct comparison of weekly versus monthly active users.

The milestone underscores how both platforms have expanded beyond early adopter audiences. Google noted that the majority of Gemini’s users are on Android, including those reached via preinstalled distribution, while OpenAI continues to explore hardware as a growth lever. Analysts suggest the race to 1 billion users has tightened, with growth rates now a key differentiator.
